Clipper Round the World Race – Crew Allocation

HUNDREDS OF CREW ALLOCATED TO INTERNATIONAL TEAMSyandy125673

More than 500 2015-16 crew assembled in Portsmouth Guildhall with their family and friends to discover which team and professional skipper they will be sailing with when the tenth edition of the Clipper Race starts on Sunday 30 August.

The twelve teams were addressed by our founder and chairman, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston with encouraging words about the challenge and adventure that lies ahead. He commented afterwards: “This is where final preparations for the race of their lives begin. Most of the crew have almost completed their training but now they can start to develop their strategies and dynamics as a team.”

1080 Media together with equipment supplied by Surtees Audio Visual covered the event for Clipper, live streaming the two hour presentation, producing news feeds and also videos for social media. The 3/4G WMT transmitter was used from inside the Guildhall in Portsmouth, uplinking at a solid 5MB throughout, enabling an HD stream to YouTube and also to our special VidZapper player which was used to stream live into China. This was important for both sponsors and crew based in the city of Qingdao, who although 7 hours ahead, were able to enjoy the live show throughout.

There was a tremendous atmosphere during the day, and huge excitement as names were read out for each team. Video sample here: https://youtu.be/ccmqkqH_q3o

ITF Fed Cup Semi-Finals – Russia & Czech Republic victorious…

Some fabulous tennis as the Fed Cup semi-finals rolled into Sochi in Russia for their tie against Germany, and defending champions Czech Republic faced up to France in Ostrava.

Our teams were there providing news coverage with a satellite playout for the International Tennis Federation once again, plus videos for social media. We cover all facets of the ties, from the players dinners to the official draws, the post draw interviews and we are on court working with the host broadcasters for the winning, and then losing interviews with the players and Captains.

The dominant Czech team which includes Petra Kvitova, ranked No.4 in the world, won with a 3-1 margin, and are perhaps favourites to win the title for the fourth time in 5 years.

Meanwhile over in Russia, it was an excellent tie between two strong teams. Russia went 2-o up on the first day, but then Andrea Petkovic (ranked 11) and Angelique Kerber (ranked 12) led a German fightback to level the tie at 2-2. That set up a Doubles rubber that would decide the finalists, and the Russian duo of Pavlyuchenkova and Vesnina prevailed with a 2-0 victory to send the spectators home happy. The finals are next November in Prague.

Chrissie Hynde performs

Our team was lucky enough to be invited to cover the recent Joe Strummer Charity bash at the stylish Boisdale Restaurant in Canary Wharf.

Working together with Surtees Audio Visual who provided screens, vision mixers and recording equipment, we covered the evening as some top performers did their thing – these included  MIKE D’ABO singing Handbags and Gladrags,

JOOLS HOLLAND & HIS BOOGIE WOOGIE SHOW (who is a patron of Boisdale), with Axel Zwingenbergerand Ben Waters and  guest star appearances from MICK JONES, SUGGS from Madness, and  CHRISSIE HYNDE of the Pretenders.

What a brilliant night!

Goodwood 73rd Members Meeting

Goodwood 73rd Members Meeting – live streamed

Tony Gaze Trophy Goodwood Members Meeting

For the first time, Goodwood chose to stream the coverage of their Members Meeting – a weekend that is literally only open to this group of enthusiasts. Working together with Aurora Media who were providing the live coverage, our team streamed both days live from early morning until it was so late, the cars needed their headlights to see the race track!

With multiple streams to suit different requirements and demands, it’s a huge event and lots of work for everyone, but also hugely enjoayble.

Fabulous event loved by all – well done to all involved.

Richard III: The Reburial – Live

Working together with the Rocket Agency, we were appointed to manage the live stream on Channel 4’s website, as people filed past the coffin of King Richard III in Leicester Cathedral.

There was no IT connection on site, so we used our 3/4G WMT transmitter system from Mobile Viewpoint to link the signal from

Leicester Cathedral for King Richard III
3/4G WMT Transmitter

Leicester back to base from where we streamed for up to 8 hours a day live to the website. Due to possible issues with profanity, protests and more, we were asked to add a 10 minute delay to the stream. The team at Mobile Viewpoint were able to configure the system to enable us to achieve this with some complicated programming.

We had a single camera looking down from a high balcony on the King’s coffin, the guards and the public, with the Transmitter next to the camera inside the Cathedral. It was a tense three days, as our team had to be aware of anything seen or heard that may cause offence, and be able to switch the stream away to a pre-recorded slate in case of incident. Despite queues of up to 4 hours to get a glimpse of the King’s final resting place, and tens of thousands of visitors, there public was hugely respectful throughout and the coverage Channel 4 produced for TV and on-line was hailed as a solid success.

Davis Cup victories for GBR & Serbia

Our crews covered two ties of contrasting fortunes in the recent Davis Cup first round, working together with the International Tennis Federation.

https://youtu.be/wViiR50NygI

One team was in Glasgow, UK for GBR v USA, and the other in Kraljevo, Serbia for serbia who hosted Croatia. Here World Number 1 Novak Djokavic dominated the tie and was involved in winning 3 of the matches including both his singles, but also the doubles match. The team went on to win 5-0 in a crushing victory.

Meanwhile, world number 3 Andy Murray was playing at home in Glasgow for the first time in many years, and led an unbelievably tight, and incredibly noisy encounter with the USA who they defeated in San Diego in the same tie last year.

Murray won the opening rubber against Donald Young as expected, but James Ward, ranked outside the top 100, played the match of his life against top 20 player John Isner, coming back from 2 sets down and on the brink, to an astonishing 15-13 victory in the final set, to give GBR a 2-0 advantage after the first day.

Day 2 saw the British pair of Dom Inglot and Jamie Murray take on the world number one pair of Mike and Dan Bryan who expected a swift victory, but in the same vein as Ward, they fought back from a 2-0 deficit in the 3rd set to take the match to a 5th deciding set. That went to 7-9 in a match of over 3 hours.

Andy Murray needed no second invitation in the 4th rubber however, and took down Isner 3-1 to ensure a second consecutive victory over USA in the Davis Cup and send the full house in Glasgow through the roof with noise. Final result – 3-2 and GBR now face a home tie with France in the quarter finals.

Davis Cup and Fed Cup Finals

Two events we covered in November were the 2014 Fed Cup Final in Prague between

The magnificent stadium in Lille for the Davis Cup Final; 27,400 people is a new record attendance.

Czech Republic and Germany, and then the Davis Cup Finals between France and Switzerland in Lille working with the ITF’s fabulous TV and web teams.

Both ties finished 3-1 but were spectacular events and out team were on site for a week following the teams through press conferences, practice sessions, the official draw, opening ceremony, and the actual matches themselves, then to top it all we were invited to attend the players closing dinners.

Our role is a dual one, preparing footage for ITF licensed broadcasters for an SNG playout, producing features for the ITF web channels, and shooting match interviews with the players for both broadcast and online.

In the Fed Cup, Petra Kvitova was on top form for the Czech team as they swept past Germany with rapturous support at home, whereas, over in France during the Davis Cup, Switzerland fielded Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka and took it to the French. We had followed the french team from the very first round, covering each of their matches so go to know the players and the FFV support team, and huge thanks to Stefan and Dorothy in the media office who made our life so much easier and more fun with all their help! Federer lost his first tie to Gael Monfils, but came back to win doubles and his second rubber against Gasquet, winning the Davis Cup for Switzerland for the first time in their history, with an exquisite drop shot.

Great events, great people to work with so thanks to all.

Jazz Voice at the Barbican

The Barbican, London, November 14 2014.jazz voice

What a night! Working with Low Latency Productions and Serious events, we provided cameras and operators for this live BBC Arts red Button production, simulcast on BBC Radio 3. Tremendous work by Director Jonathan Haswell to keep the live feed rolling for over 3 hours, including through the break where we covered a chat show with the stars of Jazz Voice before rolling straight into the second act of the show. The broadcast was transmitted to BBC Scotland via internet/3G using the WMT transmitter which performed flawlessly throughout.

Arranged, scored and conducted by Guy Barker, this year’s extravaganza included Dee Dee Bridgewater, Emma Smith, Georgie Fame, Jacqui Dankworth, Jacob Banks, Kurt Elling, Natalie Williams, Sachal andVulaMalinga, alongside a fantastic 40-piece orchestra. Clipper Round the World Race Finale Live

4551-news-main
Top 3 yachts and Tower Bridge

What a fabulous weekend at St.Katherine Docks in London and a spectacular finale to an 11 month project with Clipper Ventures as the fleet of 12 race yachts returned home.

With thousands of spectators along the river Thames and packed into the docks itself, they were all there to welcome the crews and see this amazing sight first hand. As host broadcaster, we were asked to manage the live feed, news and footage requests from media around the globe once again. It was also quite a technical challenge given the location, restrictions and the scope of the operation involved. This began on Friday night when the GREAT Britain yacht crossed the finish line off Southend Pier at around 9pm to win Race 16, the final one of the Round the World Race having left London on September 1st 2013. Our crew were on board the finish line yacht, and also on three of the racing yachts from Den Helder in Holland.

Stalwart Brian Carling was on the GREAT Britain yacht, having sailed Legs 1,2,3,5 and 7 of the race; Ollie Clague was on Henri Lloyd having survived the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean crossings; and Tristan Perry was on Derry~Londonderry~Doire having sailed all the way from Singapore back in February (other on board camera operators included Dan Stephens – Legs 1 & 4, and Billy Holland – Legs 1-3. They have all had the most amazing experiences and met the most fantastic people along the way as the switched between yachts on each leg of the race to give the widest possible sponsor coverage. Having finished the race, the fleet then lined up next morning and paraded along the Thames in line astern formation.

Our live online coverage began at 11.45 am on the 12th as Presenter Hannah White greeted the global audience, streaming via YouTube and our bespoke Clipper Online player (so viewers in China could see it!).  Hundreds of websites applied for the embed code of our player so they could offer the stream to their own viewers too including the Telegraph and other international websites. Commentary was led by experienced racing sailor Mark Covell, joined by Clipper’s own Dave Cusworth who recapped the crew’s experiences and adventures as they sailed the longest ocean race on the planet – over 40,000 miles. www.clipperroundtheworld.com

We were live for 4 hours and 20 minutes with a combination of helicopter images sent via RF link, and 2 x 3/4G back-pack transmitters on race yachts and chase boats, plus RF and cabled HD cameras in the docks area.

We uploaded news cuts through the day to enable news broadcasters to access the footage, and these were widely used around the world.

It was a wonderful conclusion to a year long project, but the work continues on our TV programming, with 2 different series in production – a Sports series 9 x 25 minutes and a documentary series called ‘The Race of their Lives’ 8 x 25 minutes, both of which will be distributed by BBC Worldwide in the coming months.

Thanks to all the Clipper staff and all the sailing crew for their help and assistance!

Derry-Londonderry-Doire are first under the Golden Gate Bridge out of San Francisco…

And finally our coverage of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race continued http://www.clipperroundtheworld.com/ with the latest stop-over in San Francisco, USA. GREAT Britain won Race 10, after crossing the mighty Pacific Ocean from Qingdao in China the fastest, and had the luxury of 9 days in port before the start of Race 11 on April 19th. First across the start line at the Golden Gate Yacht Club was Derry-Londonderry-Doire who crossed just a few seconds after the gun. It’s a 3300 mile downwind sail to Panama, where the fleet of 12 yachts will stop briefly before entering and going through the Canal, before racing on to Jamaica. Watch the start video here: http://bit.ly/1jzxhZo

Well done all and good luck to those out on the water heading for Panama – sail safe, sail fast!

Dramatic ‘Man Overboard’ Rescue in Clipper Yacht Race

Derry~Londonderry~Doire crew member, Andrew Taylor (46) from London was rescued from the Pacific Ocean on March 29th after falling overboard. Derry~ Londonderry~ Doire successfully recovers man overboard He went over the side at 23.43 UTC  and was sighted again at 00.55 UTC before being recovered at approx. 01.13 UTC (13.13 local time, 30 March).

The incident happened in rough weather with 35 knots of wind and clear visibility in daylight. Skipper Sean McCarter reported that he was working with Andrew on a sail change near the bow when he fell in. Sean immediately went back to the helm, stopped the yacht and initiated the MOB (man overboard) procedure.

This video was filmed and edited on board by by 1080 Media’s Tristan Perry from Canada, who was on the yacht to record the Pacific Ocean crossing, following their adventure and experience for the BBC Worldwide programmes we are producing. The images were sent back to race HQ in the UK via satellite from the yacht, and have been seen on major TV networks globally. The footage is harrowing, and Andrew is extremely fortunate to have survived relatively unscathed. Great job by all involved in the rescue and good luck in the rest of the race.

Cultural Olympiad & London Festival Boost Britain – Report

As we were involved and played a central role in offering multi-media services to the GLA and the Mayor’s office through the ‘Summer Like No Other’ programme, we’re pleased with this report in the Evening Standard. Link to full story by Louise Jury: http://bit.ly/12s0HCI

The Cultural Olympiad involved 43.4 million people and helped transform Britain’s image abroad, according to a report published today.

The celebration of arts and culture ran for four years and culminated in the London 2012 Festival during the summer of the Games.

According to a Liverpool University study, it contributed to raising the country from fifth to fourth place in the Nations Brands Index, pinpointing places tourists wanted to visit.

The report, Reflections on the Cultural Olympiad and London 2012 Festival, said the four-year project raised the bar for cultural programming in Britain. The festivities saw a total of 37.4 attendances, and 5.9 million people participated in events.

Some 204 million were reached through broadcasts and online viewing. Many events, such as the BT River of Music concerts, were free and reminded international media and potential tourists of the great benefit of visiting the UK, the study found.

Olympiad director Ruth Mackenzie said evidence of the boost to tourism could now be used by Culture Secretary Maria Miller, who called yesterday for economic arguments to help win her fight with the Treasury for arts funding. Ms Mackenzie said: “We made some great art and we opened people’s eyes to great art. The continuing force of that, in the UK and elsewhere, is that we raised the game. If you have a great mad idea, audiences will follow.”

The British Council now intends to send one of the Olympiad commissions, artist Jeremy Deller’s bouncy Stonehenge, on a world tour. “It says we’re modern and fun and inclusive and creative, and come and join in,” said Ms Mackenzie.

She added that it would be “a shame to lose the ambition and vision” of a celebration that saw thousands dance in Trafalgar Square, thousands more join a mass nationwide bellringing, and millions attend world-class exhibitions and performances starring names from Mark Rylance to Daniel Barenboim.

Tony Hall, chairman of the Cultural Olympiad board, said it had fulfilled hopes of being a “game changer” by showcasing British talent and putting art back at the heart of the Olympics. “We all hope the legacy will be more chances to enjoy the fruit of that infrequent marriage of ample budget and unbounded imagination,” he added.

Live stream of the Abu Dhabi Triathlon – GB’s Brownlee wins!

1080 Media managed the live streaming of the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon for Aurora Worldwide, a 3 hour broadcast shown throughout the world on TV and online. It was a fantastic result for Britain’s Alistair Brownlee who won his first race since the Olympics by breaking the course record.

It was a step up in distance for the 24-year-old Yorkshireman, who has dominated the sport over the past four years, winning two world titles and Olympic gold in London.

Brownlee was racing over the short course in Abu Dhabi, which featured Olympic-length swim and runs of 1.5km and 10km respectively, sandwiching a 100km bike leg that included riding round the Yas Marina Formula One circuit.

Congratulations to all involved in the production.

BBC Radio 5Live Sports Extra Broadcasts with 3G transmitter

England V Australia netball series sees historic win!
England V Australia netball series sees historic win!

England v Australia

NETBALL – England’s women recently won a 3 match series against the number 1 ranked team in the world from Australia, with matches in Bath, Wembley Arena and Birmingham’s NIA.

USP Content, with producer Chessie Bent, won the gig to cover the series for BBC Radio 5Live Sports Extra which was broadcast – well, live! It was both online and on Digital radio simultaneously from the stadiums.

Incredibly, Britain shone, and whipped the visitors 3-0, the first time they have won a series against them and setting records in the process.

Opting to use 1080 Media’s 3G WMT transmitter from inside the stadium instead of using a traditional ISDN line, BBC took the signal in at TV Centre and span it up their line to MediaCity in Salford for broadcast to the airwaves.

With a 2 hour broadcast for each match, our unit performed flawlessly as history was written – BBC saying the quality was outstanding and that it worked ‘brilliantly’, calling it a ‘very impressive piece of kit’.

According to national funding body Sport England, almost 160,000 women play netball every week!!

Great job Chessie and thanks to all at USP!

Two recent Conferences Live Streamed…

We were lucky enough to win the opportunity to live stream 2 conferences – one was the Co-Operatives United conference from the G-Mex centre in Manchester, over our client Surtees, and the other was in Brussels with the whole day devoted to the issue of Hate Crime, for USP Content’s client UCLAN.

For Manchester it was all streamed with our 3G WMT transmitter – 7 hours per day for 3 days without a hitch as expected, while in Brussels it was an 8 hour day, generating the biggest audience the conference had seen, easily surpassing it’s anticipated viewing target.

Thanks to Vidzapper for all their help with the internet players for these!

1080 Media completes ‘A Summer Like No Other’

Multi-media coverage for Mayor of London’s 2012 Festival.

1080 Media Organisation has completed ‘A Summer Like No Other’ having won the hugely prestigious contract to provide multimedia services for the Mayor of London’s 2012 Festival of events which took place throughout the city.

With over 250 events  across 33 London boroughs, 1080 Media and their partners provided comprehensive photo and video coverage to not only record these for posterity, but to make content rapidly available to meet press office and social media requirements. Highlights included covering huge public events such as the Olympic and Paralympic Torch relays in London, BT London Live in Hyde, Victoria and Regent’s Parks, many of the Mayor’s engagements on location and at City Hall, and the Team GB Parade which showcased London at its cultural and entertaining best in this ‘Summer Like No Other’ line-up. www.molpresents.com

1080 Media worked with TVEverywhere to create a bespoke online Content Management System, and Pete Webb Photography (PWP) with a team of specialist photographers.  Together with 1080 Media’s TV crews, these were deployed throughout the capital for 63 continuous days, working in shifts to manage the demands of the project. The photos and videos were edited on site at events then uploaded to the customised ‘GLA Multimedia Content System’ so that staff at the Greater London Authority could swiftly access and distribute the resources.

Cliff Webb, CEO of 1080 Media said, ”we’re delighted to not only have won this tender, as we pitched against some major companies, but also to have delivered what has been a hugely successful project for the GLA. The level of coordination required, the tremendous cooperation with people at City Hall, combined with the technical expertise in delivering this has all been tremendously rewarding”. He continued, ”It was a key assignment spanning hundreds of different events and involved synchronisation with many different parties from event security to individual organisers and suppliers. We had multiple teams on the road every day needing to be in the right place, producing top class creativity, and uploading to the online system remotely through the 3G network. People were literally working around the clock to make it all happen and it was a fantastic technical, yet inspiringly artistic project to be involved with, which for me personally, culminated in being on board the floats with the triumphant Team GB Parade and enjoying that incredible wave of crowd emotion’’.

The tender was announced in May and 1080 Media passed two selection processes before being awarded the contract, just 3 weeks before the first event took place on the River Thames at Tower Bridge with Seb Coe, Jeremy Hunt MP and Mayor Boris Johnson. To meet the demand, TVEverywhere rapidly adapted their existing ‘Mstorer’ system for use by GLA. CEO Iolo Jones commented ‘’as well as making it easy to upload, version, control and distribute videos and images around the world, adopting our Mstorer system meant that a record of these unique events is now preserved in a library for posterity, while being instantly accessible online. We continued to evolve the system to meet demands as the project moved along, which has helped develop this into what we believe is a world

Our team were on hand to capture the sensational aerial performance of Circus Circus…

beating system that could be utilised by any company or authority requiring a secure but flexible archive.”

Pete Webb, an acclaimed and experienced adventure and events specialist, set the style of coverage for the assignments, guiding the team who produced stunning images of the capital in all its glory. He commented, ‘’it was an extraordinary opportunity to capture the city through one of the most exciting and colourful moments London has ever seen. We and the video crews had access to incredible iconic and historic locations, to athletes and top class international performers, and it really was an amazing privilege to be involved’’.

Di Henry, the Programme Director of Look & Celebrations for GLA said, ‘’we chose 1080 Media because we were impressed by their approach to all  of the criteria in the tender, and were attracted to a strong technical and creative proposal which delivered some outstanding coverage and really helped capture the Mayor’s ‘Summer Like No Other’’.
